I need a new bike, but finding absolutely the right one has not been easy:-
" I like to cover useful distances on the road, however I don't fancy a super road bike with drop handlebars and a painful saddle. I travel to the office by bike, so want something relaxing that will also take a bit of luggage. Mudguards are vital as well - I can't turn up at work covered in mud.
" I like to venture occasionally down the canal towpath, but I don't want a mountain bike with big thick tyres that is hard to pedal on the tarmac - and the road is where I will spend most of my time.
The range of bikes in the marketplace is vast, with many suppliers trying to get a share of the action. So it's not easy to find your way through all the possibilities. Most bikes I checked out just didn't suit in the least - most were just not speedy enough Gentle riding would be no challenge. But they were just not designed for speed. Then I discovered the Cannondale Quick.
Just one look at the bikes in the Quick series was enough to tell me that I had discovered the right bike:-
" Lightweight alloy frame, looking as though it was designed for speed. The bikes higher up the range have carbon forks as well.
" Stacks of gears to help me up the hills on the way to the office. Again, the superior bikes in the range have really good road bike gears- not as a rule found on hybrid bikes.
" Mini V-brakes which have plenty of power but are simple to maintain, in contrast to the disc brakes you so often find.
" The wheels on the versions towards the top of the range are truly elegant - the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. OK, a standard arrangement with more spokes will be more robust, but for riding on the road, just great.
" The prices are not bad. You can get cheaper for sure. But the range starts at about £600. If you have the funds, you can spend up to £1100 - but this is rather beyond my price range.
So after doing a bit of research on the Web, I made my way to the local Cannondale stockist for a trial ride. I decided on a model from around the middle of the range, as it appeared to tick all the boxes. But it was at a price that was not going to break the bank.
The test ride was a revelation. The bike felt stable, yet sprightly and nimble. Road vibration was not at all noticeable, thanks to the carbon forks, and the saddle and handlebars made for a very comfortable riding position, perfect for extended trips. The gear change was slick, with a decent choice of ratios for hill-climbing.
I could see that this was a bike that I would look forward to riding home following a hard day at the office.
I didn't hesitate. I placed the order straight away. I'm going to have to wait a week or so, but the wait is sure to be worthwhile.
