For a while now I've been trying to find a bike to match my actual kind of riding:-
" Although I like to cover the miles on the road, a genuine road bike with drop handlebars and an uncomfortable saddle wouldn't be right. I commute to the office by bike, so need something relaxing that will also take a bit of luggage. It needs to have mudguards as well for when it's wet.
" I like to venture occasionally along the canal towpath, but I don't want a mountain bike with huge thick tyres that is hard to pedal on the road - which is where I expect to do most of my riding.
The range of bikes in the market is enormous, with lots of manufacturers trying to get a share of the action. So researching the market is not easy. So many of the bikes that I looked at were just not right - most of them didn't have the right design approach They were all right for leisure riding. But they were simply not made for speed. Then someone pointed out the Cannondale Quick .
It didn't take me long to come to a decision that, in the Quick, I had discovered the kind of bike that would suit me ideally:-
" Lightweight alloy frame, looking as though it was designed for speed. Carbon forks on the higher models in the range.
" A decent range of gear ratios for (relatively) easy hill-climbing. Once again, the superior bikes in the collection have really good road bike gears- not generally found on hybrid bikes.
" Straightforward brakes - sturdy V-brakes which need minimal maintenance, unlike the disc brakes you regularly find.
" The wheels on the higher models are simply stunning - paired spokes that look as though they have come off a road bike. OK, a regular arrangement with more spokes will be more durable, but these are just fine for road riding.
" Pretty sensible prices for what you get. You can get cheaper for sure. The Quick range starts at around £600. You can spend up to £1100 if you choose - a bit beyond my price range I have to confess.
So after doing a bit of research on the Net, I went along to the local stockist to try one out. I chose a model from the lower half of the collection, which appeared to have all the functions that were most important to me. However at the same time not too expensive for me.
The trial ride was a revelation. The bike felt pretty nippy and sprightly, yet stable. Road vibration was not at all noticeable, thanks to the carbon forks, and the saddle and handlebars made for a very relaxed riding position, perfect for extended trips. Gear selection was very smooth, with plenty of low ratios for getting up the hills.
I could see that this was a bike that I would look forward to riding home following a hard day at the office.
The verdict was a bit of a no-brainer. The order was placed. I'm going to have to wait a week or so, but the wait is certain to be worthwhile.
