Tissue forceps can sometimes be used in two ways during needle extraction. You can use forceps to grab the needle before to you letting it go by the needle holder, or the forceps can clutch the tissue on the needle during the needle holder release, to prevent confusion of the needle from the tissue. Use forceps with "teeth" to stabilize tissue more effectively on the needle; use "smooth" forceps to grasp needle more effectively for extraction.
If your using the tissue forceps for needle extraction, use this method when you grasp the needle perpendicular to the shaft using the needle holder. Its perpendicular to the shaft when you using the needle holder. You have a more secure grab when if you use a perpendicular or oblique way. This perpendicular hold on the forceps enables you to have a better rotating motion to remove the needle, without altering the axis of the forceps.
In many situations, tissue forceps & clamps can be used interchangeably in certain cases clamps & tissue forceps can be interchangeably. In order to have traction get better exposure with a bleeding vessel its smart to use forceps or a clamp. Forceps are better than clamps because they can be more easily opened and closed, and the tension on tissue can be more specifically gauged than with clamps. Clamps, on the other hand, have the advantage of better grip and the ability to hold for an extended time without causing weakness.
Tissue forceps are used for the function of the opposing fingers and thumb. Hold forceps between thumb & forefingers, be sure the metacarpal-phalangeal joint of the index finger rest along with the shanks in a pencil position.
When going back and forth between using tissue forceps, as when sewing then tying, while you are tying be sure to palm the tissue forceps. Using your sublimis muscles try to use a palm position, not the profundus. Change the forceps from the "hold" to the "use" position with the palm down, letting gravity to move the forceps away from the palm so the index finger and thumb fingers can simply re-grasp the forceps in correct position.
